Could Tenerife become an example of sustainable island living? - 0 replies
Hello everyone,
Tenerife is often known for its climate, nature and tourism, but I think the island is also an interesting place to discuss the future of sustainable living.
Around the world, more people are exploring ideas that combine renewable energy, technology, nature and better communities. One of these ideas is the Solarpunk movement.
Spain has seen growing interest in this movement, with discussions about sustainable architecture, renewable energy and new ways of living.
I recently wrote an article about the Solarpunk movement in Spain and why places like the Canary Islands are interesting examples for these ideas: El movimiento «solarpunk» gana popularidad en España – un futuro sin miedo ni catástrofes
I would love to hear opinions from people living in Tenerife:
Do you think Tenerife could become an example of sustainable island living in the future?
Are there already local projects or initiatives that are moving in this direction?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
Looking for a job: Jobs and careers in Tenerife – realistic opportunities (2026) - 0 replies
Hello everyone,
I wanted to share a few thoughts and also hear your experiences about working in Tenerife, especially in the south (Los Cristianos / Adeje / Las Américas).
From what I’ve seen and experienced, the job market here is quite mixed. There are still opportunities in hospitality, tourism and seasonal work, but salaries are often quite low compared to the cost of living, especially when it comes to rent in the south.
For many expats, it seems that the most realistic options are:
- hospitality (bars, restaurants, hotels)
- tourism-related jobs
- remote work or self-employment
- seasonal or flexible contracts
One thing that stands out is that speaking Spanish (even basic level) makes a big difference when looking for anything beyond entry-level work.
I’m curious how others here see it:
- Have you managed to find stable work in Tenerife?
- Do you mainly work locally or remotely?
- Has the situation changed much in the last 1–2 years?
It would be great to hear real experiences from people living here long-term.
Best regards,
Sergio
What surprised you most when you first moved to Tenerife? - 1 replies
Interested in hearing experiences from both long-term residents and newcomers.
Many people move to Tenerife expecting sunshine and a relaxed lifestyle, but I'm sure there are things that surprised them after arriving.
What was the biggest surprise for you?
Was it the culture, bureaucracy, cost of living, local people, climate differences between north and south, or something completely unexpected?
I'd love to hear your experiences.

Hello everyone,
My name is Sergio. I originally come from Germany and spend a lot of time in Tenerife.
I speak German, Spanish, English and Russian and I'm interested in life on the island, local news, business and the expat community.
I'm also working on a Spanish-language online magazine about Russian-speaking communities in Spain and Europe.
Looking forward to meeting people here and exchanging experiences about Tenerife.
Best regards,
Sergio

Hi ,
can you please advise which is better priced a airport taxi, Uber, or private taxi from Costa Adeje airport thanks
Hello,
my name is Sandra, I’m self-employed and I live in Tenerife, Canary Islands.
We are promoting a service that is very popular among British residents:
👉 home water carbonators, so you can enjoy sparkling water comfortably at home.
In addition to selling the carbonators, we also take care of refills. You don’t need to change the cartridge every time – we offer a “empty for full” service at several points across the island.
We have a website with videos showing how it works:

If you’re interested or want more information, feel free to contact me.
Thanks!

Hi. It's been a long time since I even looked at tenerife forum and either the format has changed, or it's actually a new site.
Anyway, we've been coming to Tenerife since 2007. Some years we would get here for 3 visits (always in winter time). Lots of changes over the years, as with everywhere!
One of the most striking, since covid, us the increase in prices. Whilst, during the day time, one can still get a cheap pint, lots of drinks are as expensive, or even more than at home. The measures of spirits are also smaller!! Restaurant menus are also getting more like at home. At home, prices increased by about 30%, here it's more like 70/80%
So, I'm wondering, was there a tax increase from the local government that's played a part in this?
Just wondering!?,
